Adam spent their childhood in and out of care and left home and the care system, at the age of 16. With little support from anywhere they lost their way a little, finding himself homeless at one point and not knowing how they could get help. Adam believes their love of learning helped them and at the age of 19 they did their first course with us and then studied a range of personal and social development courses. They believe we helped them to understand things more and they were diagnosed with ADHD and Autism while studying here, knowing that they would be accepted and supported. Adam then went on to study a degree in History and Politics at Coventry University. They had wanted to go to university from the age of 10 and now had the confidence to pursue their dream. Not only did Adam succeed but way they were the youngest Student of the Year at the university. During their time with Coventry, Adam chose to spend a year studying in Luxembourg where they established the first ever LGBTQ+ student group at the Danish university and was given an award by the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg for their work addressing local social issues.
Back at Fircroft some time later, Adam is enjoying mixing with fellow students and teachers who have a wide breadth of experience and knowledge, that they feel they didn’t have access to when they were at university. They are studying subjects that aren’t offered at universities and they have recently completed our Award in Independent Advocacy course.
The future is certainly bright for Adam, who has been offered a place at several universities to study a Masters Degree in International Relations, and their ambition is to pursue a career where they can make a difference to people’s lives, globally. Well done Adam!
