Introduction to Counselling Skills Level 2

This course introduces you to the basics of counselling theory, including psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. You’ll learn how these theories support essential counselling skills and their practical application.

On this course, you will explore professional ethics, codes of conduct, and the personal qualities needed for effective counselling. The course includes interactive activities to help you develop practical skills in conducting, maintaining, and concluding basic counselling sessions.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid foundation in counselling principles. However, please note that this course is an introduction and does not qualify you to practice as a professional counsellor. It is an excellent starting point for those considering a career in counselling or anyone looking to improve their interpersonal skills

Understand the role of counselling skills in a helping relationship

Understand the role of professional frameworks or codes of ethics/practice/conduct

Know about the core personal qualities that enable the competent and ethical use of counselling skills

Be able to demonstrate basic counselling skills

Understand the importance of confidentiality and safeguarding in counselling

Understand how theory underpins counselling skills

Understand the main elements of the Psychodynamic approach, the Humanistic approach and the Cognitive-Behavioural approach.

  • Understand the non-directive nature of counselling skills.
  • Know how to recognise own emotions.
  • Know how to use non-verbal communication.
  • Understand the role of theory that underpins the counselling process.
  • Understand professional boundaries in counselling practice

Accreditation

On successful completion of this course, you will receive a Fircroft College of Adult Education certificate.

Entry Requirements 

You must be working at level 1 or above in literacy and be in work or looking to gain employment. You must also be able to demonstrate why you think this course will be useful for your professional progression.
