This Level 1 course focuses on key areas such as reading, writing and speaking and listening, ensuring that students can effectively understand and communicate in various contexts.

The course focuses on real life applications of English and it is ideal for anyone looking to improve their English skills for personal development, career advancement, or further education.

This course is ideal for students who have longer term study plans but are not yet ready for Level 2.

Also, whilst primarily aimed at people whose first language is English, it does attract a lot of students for whom English is an additional language, as well as other students with a lower level of English than the national standard (Level 2).

We can recommend it for stronger ESOL students who have passed our Entry-Level 3 ESOL course.

If applicants have not studied and completed an Entry-Level 3 course at Fircroft previously, they will be asked to complete an English language assessment at the college to determine their current level of English. It is recommended that people with a stronger level of English only, apply, to avoid disappointment.

The main benefit of Functional Skills English is that the skills can be used in a range of real life scenarios. The course focuses on topics which are reflected in the news, society and the 6 Fircroft College values, with some focus on sustainability. It’s an accredited course with a nationally recognised certificate awarded on completion.

During the course, students will be assessed by the following methods:

Reading – assessed via external exam

Writing – assessed via external exam

Speaking and Listening – three activities assessed internally and recorded for external moderation.

Accreditation

This course is accredited by City & Guilds and students will receive a City & Guilds certificate on successful completion of this course

Progression

Students can apply for our Level 2 courses, including English Functional Skills Level 2, or longer courses such as our Academic and Career Skills Programme (ACSP).

Entry Requirements

Students will need to be able to demonstrate they are working working at the very least at Entry-Level 3 English – working towards Level 1 English. This may mean they will have to complete an English assessment at the college as part of their application.
