Why do some people achieve more in education systems than others? Why do some people live in more healthy ways than others? This course is an introduction to the critical questions that social sciences asks about human beings and society. We will consider different problems in society and think about the many ways that social scientists have researched and tried to solve these problems. Applying theories and ideas from psychology and sociology to systems such as healthcare, criminal justice and education, we will look at how social science can help us to understand the world around us.
We will develop critical questions to ask about our everyday experiences and we will consider new ways of looking at familiar aspects of life such as education, healthcare and criminal justice.
By the end of this course you will have an understanding of:
- key terms and approaches in social science
- how to explore psychological and social approaches to criminal behaviour
- different social science approaches to systems such as healthcare and education
