Essential digital skills are the basic skills you need to use technology effectively in everyday life and work. This can include using a laptop or computer, using the internet to search for information or sending emails, being safe online and being able to use things like Word where you can create documents, save them and send them to others.
The purpose of the course is to help you understand, and improve, how you use essential digital skills for life and/or work.

Level
Level 1
Level 1 provides you with learning and a qualification that gives you foundational knowledge and skills in this area
On this course you will learn the following digital skills:
- Being safe and responsible online and on digital devices for example, using strong passwords, being respectful online, keeping your personal information safe and being able to recognise and avoid online scams.
- Using digital devices such as the basics of using a laptop/computer, using the mouse to work on programs and apps and being able to adjust settings when using a device. Handling information such as searching for information online, saving files and documents, pictures and videos, setting up and organising online files to keep your documents safe and making sure important documents are saved correctly.
- Creating and editing such as writing a letter or creating a poster, making a presentation, using different texts, fonts and features and adding pictures to documents.
- Digital communication such as writing, sending and replying to emails or instant messages and sharing files with others.
- Transacting digitally such as online shopping, online banking, booking things online and filling out online forms.

Entry Requirements
You must be working at Entry-Level 3 or above in digital skills and Level 1 or above in literacy. We will assess you to see if you are working at the right level.
If you are not quite at the right level for this course, we have a lower level course and a higher-level course we can refer you to attend instead.
When attending the course, it would be helpful (but not vital) if you have an understanding of the following foundation skills which underpin all essential digital skills:
- How to turn on a device
- Use the available controls on your device
- Make use of accessibility tools on your device to make it easier to use
- Interact with the home screen on your device
- Understand that the internet allows you to access information and content and that you can connect to it through Wi-FI
- How to connect your device to a safe and secure Wi-Fi network
