We spoke to Robert Williams (26) from Birmingham, about his experiences as a short course student at Fircroft College

Why did you decide to come to Fircroft?

I came to Fircroft to further my education. I wanted to develop my personal skills as well as acquire IT skills. I wanted to do better in life as I felt my previous jobs weren’t bringing out the best in me. I was ready for a new and challenging career.  I’ve always wanted to work in an office environment and decided to get my skills up to that level. I had been thinking ‘where can I go to reach this ambition’ and Fircroft seemed the best place.

How did you hear about Fircroft?

I walked past it on Bristol Road one day and saw the sign – I immediately came into reception and picked up a short course guide and application forms.

What were you doing before you came here?

Before this I was living in supported housing and on jobseekers allowance. I had been unemployed for approximately four years and really lacked confidence so that’s why I decided to do some personal development courses. I kept thinking, “I have no job, I have GCSE grades which are all D’s and E’s and so I really need to gain qualifications for a good career.”

What do you like about Fircroft?

I like the fact that I’ve met people similar to myself. The other students, like me, also want to better themselves. It’s been great learning with students that are easy to get on with. I like that you’re not judged at Fircroft. The teaching staff are helpful, kind and supportive. The college in itself is a great place to learn – great food, accommodation and environment. With a 24 hour library - I’ve always had access to resources whenever I’ve needed to use them.

How has being at Fircroft benefited you?

I wouldn’t be able to have this one-to-one discussion had I not come here. I’ve always lacked confidence until I came to Fircroft. After just one personal development course (confidence and self-awareness) everyone noticed a big change in me -for the better. I feel I’m more assertive, confident and can now finally believe in myself and my qualities. Due to the courses I have qualified in e.g. personal development and IT – I have been recently notified of a job opportunity in an office environment, just as I had always wanted. I am due to start this role very soon. What’s more, I have been informed that with some progression and persistence, I can be given the opportunity to undertake the role of a support worker in the near future.

What do you plan to do after Fircroft?

I plan to return to Fircroft and build on the knowledge that I already have. I intend to return next year and do further levels on some IT courses but this time from a working perspective. I aim to exceed the 14 courses that I’ve already achieved! In the meantime, I will be carrying out some voluntary work around an IT-based role.
